Dodgers Announce Freddie Freeman Injury Update After Scary Fall vs Royals Led to Early Exit

Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman fell into the opposing dugout in the top of the eighth inning of Wednesday night's game against the Kansas City Royals in a scary scene at UNIQLO Field at Dodger Stadium.

Freeman was trying to catch a foul ball on the first base side, but it kept carrying as it was coming down.

The ball ended up in the Royals dugout, and Freeman fell over the steps and directly onto the dugout floor as he attempted to make the catch.

Freeman was down for a few moments but was able to get back up and walk back to first base, remaining in the game on defense. Miguel Rojas ran into the dugout to help him, as did multiple people from the Royals side.

After the top of the eighth inning concluded, Freeman went into the dugout and directly down to the clubhouse.

His spot was due up first in the lineup in the bottom of the eighth inning. He was pinch-hit for, with Tommy Edman coming in.

Kiké Hernández ended up playing first base in the top of the ninth inning as LA closed out the game and completed the sweep.

What is Freddie Freeman's Injury?

Manager Dave Roberts said after Wednesday's game that Freeman is sore in his hand, knee, foot and shoulder.

However, he said the team "dodged a bullet" and that the All-Star first baseman is considered "day-to-day."

“He’s sore. Hand, knee, foot, shoulder a little bit," Roberts said, via the SportsNet LA broadcast. "But I think that we really dodged a bullet. It looked very scary visually."

Roberts said the team doesn't believe they'll have to call anyone up to replace Freeman, who also spoke to reporters after the game.

“Kneecaps are sore, shoulder is sore, hand is sore, wrist is sore,” Freeman said. “I mean, I fell. But I’m in good spirits. I’ve already cold tubbed. I’ve done everything I needed to do to put myself in a position to be able to hopefully play [Thursday].”

Dodgers Can't Afford a Freddie Freeman Injury

Freeman has been one of the most consistent players for the Dodgers this season and has helped keep the offense afloat amid a rough stretch for many of the top guys.

Including Wednesday's 1-for-2 night, Freeman is hitting .306 across 118 games this season with 15 home runs, 57 RBIs and an OPS of .852.

Freeman is the Dodgers' only true first baseman on the roster. Hernández is able to play first base as is Max Muncy, but it's unlikely the Dodgers would kick Muncy over amid his breakout defensive season at third base this year.

As for the minor league level, top prospects Ryan Ward and James Tibbs III can play first base.
