Giants' Starter Logan Webb's Luck Runs Out Against the Red Sox

In this story:

Rafael Devers' return to Fenway Park may have featured a home run, but it was all for naught against his former team. The Boston Red Sox rained on Raffy's reunion by defeating his San Francisco Giants, 6-4.

With the loss, the Giants' losing season continues, as they are now 52-76 and a terrifying 25.5 games back in the National League West Division.

The Boys from the Bay Area have now lost seven of their last 10 contests and got an out-of-character performance from ace Logan Webb.

The 29-year-old hurler lost his command and got crushed in the third inning of the ballgame, both by the numbers and the bat of Willson Contreras. The veteran hitter hit a blast over the Green Monster that traveled so far that NASA is still gathering the final data on it.

It was definitely an off night for the pitcher, who has pitched well recently. The 2.2 innings out of the gate were the shortest start of the season for Webb, who was also abnormally erratic. The starter walked three hitters for the first time since May and also hit two, in what degenerated quickly for the right-hander.

“I couldn’t put a finger on it,” Webb said following the game, per writer Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. “Just not very good.”

Webb Has Been Getting Results

Which is surprising, considering the Giants' anointed ace has been outstanding over four straight starts, in which his team won all four tilts. And even after last night's debacle, he still has the type of numbers that would be fitting for a possible Cy Young candidate during that stretch. And if he had matched this same sample size throughout the season? He would be.

Logan Webb's last 5 appearances — total
Record: 3-1
ERA: 2.83
Strikeouts: 23
Walks: 6
Innings: 28⅔
Earned runs: 9

With Webb in place for at least 2027, manager Tony Vitello and his coaching staff must figure out a way to sustain that success, and Webb could then take a big step forward in terms of his status in the game. Many feel that Webb is considered the team's '#1 guy' in their starting pitching rotation because, quite frankly, there isn't much else to work with right now.

As he approaches 30, Webb is the longest-tenured member of the team, having been originally drafted by the organization in 2015 before debuting in The Show in 2019. He's a three-time All-Star, and he's been a fixture in 'Frisco.

However, he must get some arms around him if the Giants plan to feel the sweet embrace of playoff baseball again. That would take a lot of pressure off Webb, leading to fewer appearances like the one Friday night in Fenway.
