Cleveland Guardians Showing True Identity After Another Loss in Detroit

The Cleveland Guardians may just not be a legitimate playoff contender in 2026.

The Cleveland Guardians lost yet again Tuesday night, this time to the Detroit Tigers in what was a winnable game. This dropped the club to 58-62 on the year and are sitting in the fourth spot in the American League Central division.

The good news is the Chicago White Sox lost as well, keeping the deficit at four games in the division. The bad news is the Guardians continue to scuffle and may be running out of time to turn things around.

This may just be who they are in 2026.

A telling note from Tuesday's loss is Tanner Bibee dropping to 4-12 on the season. Of course, pitcher win/loss records are not a great stat for evaluating one's season. But given his 3.99 ERA, it does set off alarms about a lack of run support and thus consistent struggles by his offense.

Of his 12 losses, nine have come in games where the offense has scored two or fewer runs. He left Tuesday's game with two runs of support at the time of his departure.

The woes go well beyond simply when Bibee is on the mound. The Guardians enter play Wednesday with 477 runs scored on the season. That is 20 worse than the last-place Kansas City Royals and the third-worst mark in the AL.

This puts extra pressure on the pitching staff, especially the bullpen. A glaring example of that came in Sunday's rain-soaked loss in Chicago. The bullpen had to pitch after the first inning due to a rain delay. The offense was able to manage three total runs off a White Sox bullpen dealing with the same predicament, making Craig Yoho's four-run inning a game-sealer.

Last night's loss did feature some positives. Chase DeLauter hit a home run, Steven Kwan had two hits, and Jo Adell drove in two and had a home run. The Guardians even outhit the Tigers, 9-6.

But the hits were not enough, as the name of the game is to drive in runs. Going 0-9 with RISP is not going to cut it, and is the story of the season.

The Guardians offense has, for years, gone to the beat of Jose Ramirez's drum. That makes his slow year, where is slashing .235/.335/.383, a nightmare scenario. The star is struggling and there is just not enough strength around him to make up for his lackluster year.

The season is not over yet and fans will continue to note last year's miraculous 15.5-game comeback to take the division. The difference is that in 2026, the overall talent seems to be the problem for the first time in a while.
