Prospect Pitcher Justin Campbell Activated Off Injured List Following Scare

In this story:
On July 8, the Cleveland Guardians placed right-handed prospect pitcher Justin Campbell on the injured list.
And after years of overcoming adversity, he was yet again facing it.
But as he has done time and time again, Campbell showed that little can stand in his way for long. The Guardians’ No. 10-ranked prospect has gotten healthy after being pulled from his Triple-A debut with Columbus, once again proving his resilience as he worked his way back from an oblique injury.
Announced by the organization on Sunday, August 23, Campbell was officially back from the 7-day IL and was set to make his first appearance with the Clippers.
The Cleveland Guardians Player Development System has announced the following moves:

Activate Justin Campbell off the 7-Day IL in COL.
Release Jake Miller from COL.
Place Luis De La Cruz on the 7-Day IL in LCO (low back strain).
Tossing through two innings against St. Paul, he allowed just one hit and one walk, with no runners crossing home plate. He also struck out a batter.
After missing the past few years due to significant arm injuries, there were understandable questions about how he would look upon his return. While he didn’t go deep into the outing, seeing him work through hitters and record outs on just 24 total pitches was an encouraging sign that the injuries hadn’t significantly affected his game.
Unlike prospect pitcher Daniel Espino, who ended up transitioning to the bullpen following a few major arm surgeries, the Guardians seem set on trying to keep Campbell as a member of the starting rotation.
He will likely get a week or so off before getting his second appearance in Columbus.

Before getting the promotion to the stop below The Show, the 25-year-old had already impressed in High-A Lake County and Double-A Akron.
While with the Captains, he started six games and posted a 2.40 ERA with a 0.933 WHIP. He also allowed just nine hits, five walks and four earned runs, striking out 22 batters along the way. That consistency put him in a position to make the jump to Akron.
When there, he made nine starts, and just as he did in Lake County, he thrived.
He started nine games, putting up a 2.70 ERA and 1.255 WHIP. While his traffic on the base paths increased, so did his strikeout total and efficiency in the zone. He ended up averaging 10.8 strikeouts per nine innings, all while limiting heavy contact.
Injuries may have derailed the start of his career, but his fast rise through the system this season put him in a position to continue working his way to the big leagues.
By the end of the 2027 season, if he keeps his current play up, there is a real possibility he could be looking at a late-season nod to lace up his cleats at Progressive Field.
