Tyler Beede Finds Himself In Crucial Role With Guardians

Tyler Beede has given the Cleveland Guardians three strong appearances to start the new MLB season.

Tyler Beede’s spot on the Cleveland Guardians’ roster was never guaranteed. He only signed a minor league deal with the organization during the offseason with a non-roster invite to spring training.hoping to show he still had what it takes to pitch in the big leagues after spending 2023 in Japan.

However, early injuries to Cleveland’s pitching staff opened up an opportunity for Beede to crack the Opening Day roster and now he finds himself in a crucial role in the Guardians’ bullpen. 

Beede has appeared in three of Cleveland’s first six games tallying 4.0 total innings pitched. In those appearances, he’s struck six batters, issued just one walk, and hasn’t given up a hit. 

It’s not just that the former first-round pick has appeared in these games, but rookie manager Stephen Vogt is trusting him in the biggest moments.

Beede entered in the eighth inning in Cleveland's 5-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners. He held the game where it was at and played a key role as the setup man to Cleveland’s All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase.

“You’ve got to be on your toes at all times and prepared for any situation,” said Beede on Tuesday night. “Especially in my role knowing I can do length and then one inning if needed as well. I just love the opportunity there. I relish in those moments and am just happy I can do my job and pass the baton to Clase.”

The bullpen is still shorthanded with Trevor Stephan (who will miss the 2023 season), Sam Hentges, and James Karinchak sidelined. Beede will continue to play an important role for the Guardians as the setup man or as a long reliever. If he keeps this up, Beede could be an important piece for Cleveland even when some of the other arms are healthy.
