The New York Mets have their sights set on a position player depth piece with some pop.

And it's a familiar face, first baseman/DH Luke Voit, who the Mets are moving towards an agreement with about a minor league deal with an invite to big-league spring training, according to The New York Post's Joel Sherman. SNY insider Andy Martino was the first to report that the sides were in talks.

Voit played a portion of last season for the Mets' Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse. During this stint, the 33-year-old crushed it at the plate, posting a 1.058 OPS, 14 home runs and 35 RBIs in just 37 games. However, the Mets never called the slugger up to the majors, which led to his decision to opt out of his minor league deal in August.

Voit finished the 2023 campaign in the big-leagues with the Milwaukee Brewers, but only produced a .549 OPS with zero homers and four RBIs in 22 games.

The former Yankee has proven that he can still swing it at some capacity, so there is some value there.

His best years came in the Bronx from 2018-2020, where he became a mainstay in the Yankees' lineup as their everyday first baseman. He also led the majors in homers in 2020 and came in at ninth in the AL MVP race during the Covid-shortened season.

Eventually, Voit was bit by the injury bug and ultimately fell out of favor before the Yankees went ahead and replaced him with Anthony Rizzo, who they acquired from the Chicago Cubs at the 2021 trade deadline.

Time will tell regarding whether Voit can get back on track at the big-league level, but he certainly carries a thunderous bat, which could be a good fit at DH for the Mets if Mark Vientos and others flounder early on.
