Why Mets Need to Find Out if Luis Torrens' Power Surge Is for Real

The New York Mets have a unique catching situation that could set them up well for success in 2027. Francisco Alvarez has the potential to be a plus hitter behind the plate, which is exceedingly rare, while Luis Torrens has become one of the best defenders in the sport.

David Stearns wisely held a high price on his catchers at the deadline, which makes sense considering they like Torrens enough to extend his contract earlier in the season and Alvarez has three years of club control remaining. A short lineup due to injury also created an intriguing dynamic where Alvarez has served as the DH while Torrens catches, theoretically allowing the Mets to get the best of both worlds.

That pattern should continue for a while now that Jorge Polanco is out for the season, but the Mets have seen an interesting development emerge: a power surge from Torrens. The month of August has seen Torrens go on a pronounced heater, hitting .370 with five home runs and 11 RBI in 27 at-bats.

The sample size is admittedly small here, but Torrens has looked much more confident at the plate than he ever has as a Met. Torrens has shown some pop before, notably slugging 15 homers as a member of the Seattle Mariners in 2021, though since then he has seemingly traded his offensive production for defensive gains.

Why the Mets should see if Luis Torrens' offensive surge is for real

The Mets do need some offensive help in their lineup next season, particularly at DH given Polanco's injury issues. If Torrens can hit enough to be the every day catcher, it would allow them to use Alvarez as the primary DH while catching twice a week to spell Torrens.

The dream scenario for the Mets would be to see Torrens give them 10-15 home runs a season with a batting average around .250, which would definitely play at the bottom of the lineup given his elite defense. Torrens has already produced 2 Wins Above Replacement this season as a part-time player, which is very valuable despite his limited offensive production prior to August.

Allowing Alvarez to DH more could also give him more time to work on his defense, which has slipped since the beginning of his career. The Mets have every reason to believe they can turn Alvarez into their long-term solution behind the plate but Torrens' presence is a luxury to allow them to coach up Alvarez without putting too much heat on him in game situations.

Owner Steve Cohen has also hinted that there may not be as much lavish spending this offseason as there has been in the past, which could put a premium on internal improvements bolstering the roster. Torrens seizing the every day catching job would certainly qualify, freeing up Stearns to invest in other areas of the roster over the winter.
