Lorenzen Makes Phillies History with No-Hitter Against Nationals

Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Michael Lorenzen threw a no-hitter in a 7-0 victory over the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night at Citizens Bank Park.

Lorenzen’s no hitter is the first for the Phillies since the recently-retired Cole Hamels did it on July 25, 2015, against the Chicago Cubs. After that, the Phillies traded Hamels to the Texas Rangers.

It was the 14th no-hitter in Phillies history.

Lorenzen was making his second start for the Phillies since they acquired him at the trade deadline from the Detroit Tigers.

In his first start against Miami on Thursday, Lorenzen pitched eight innings, giving up six hits, two runs and a walk. He also struck out five as he claimed the victory.

He did himself one better against the Nationals.

While Lorenzen walked four, he also struck out five as he threw 124 pitches. The Nationals’ Dominic Smith flew out to Phillies center fielder Johan Rojas for the final out of the game, triggering a celebration.

Earlier in the game, rookie Weston Wilson became the first Phillies rookie to homer in his first MLB at-bat since Marlon Anderson did it on Sept. 8, 1998. He also became the 134th player to hit a home run in their first MLB at-bat.

He also became the first Phillies rookie to hit a home run and steal a base in their first MLB game. He also became the 13th player in MLB history to do it in the game’s modern era, starting in 1901.

Meanwhile, Nick Castellanos hit two home runs, including the 200th of his career.
