Analyzing the Phillies Top Performer From the 2026 MLB Draft

In this story:
The Philadelphia Phillies have a lot to be excited about when it comes to the future of the team and the prospects in the farm system who have been successful.
Sam Dykstra, Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com created a list of each team’s top-performing player who was drafted during the 2026 MLB Draft.
Of course, a player’s performance in their first professional season doesn’t directly indicate their future Big League success or vice versa, but it’s encouraging to see young talent already flourishing on the professional baseball stage the same year they were drafted.
For the Phillies, their best player who made their professional debut in 2026 is Reece Moroney.

Philadelphia selected Moroney in the 10th round of the 2026 MLB Draft. He was the starting shortstop at the University of Rhode Island for three years before being drafted.
Moroney was also a part of the Rumson-Fair Haven baseball team that had three consecutive seasons in which they won 22 games. During his senior year, he helped lead his team to the Group II championship game for the first time in program history, hitting .351 that season with five doubles, three home runs and 10 stolen bases.
He broke through in his sophomore year at Rhode Island, slashing .356/.464/.462 with 12 doubles, three triples, two home runs, 42 RBIs, 55 runs scored and 24 stolen bases. Moroney followed up his sophomore campaign with a strong junior season in which he hit .370/.426/.494 with 19 doubles, four home runs, 50 RBIs, and 47 runs scored.
He is known as a versatile defender who played third base, second base and center field his sophomore and junior seasons, then was the team’s starting shortstop his senior year. His defense is the primary strength of his game.

“Defense has always been my best tool,” Moroney said after being drafted. “I played a handful of games at a few positions at RFH, but I always saw myself as a shortstop. Ever since I was a little kid, I would play in the backyard with my dad and tell him, ‘Make me dive.’ It’s just part of the game I have always loved.”
The 21-year-old played his first professional season this past year in the Phillies’ organization. He primarily played second base and briefly played shortstop in his professional debut, a 14-game stint with Single-A Clearwater, during which he slashed .429/.515/.518 after signing.
Moroney went 24-for-56 with three doubles, one triple, eight RBIs, 12 runs scored, 10 walks and a 1.033 OPS in his first taste of professional-level baseball.
While it may be a small sample size, Moroney had the best professional debut of any player drafted in 2026 in the Phillies’ organization. It’ll be exciting to see what the future holds for Moroney as he enters his second professional season in 2027.
