Luiz Arraez’s Slump Came at the Worst Time for Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies offense is taking a hit with Luis Arraez struggling the last few games.

The biggest move that the Philadelphia Phillies made ahead of the MLB trade deadline was with the San Francisco Giants.

Second baseman Luis Arraez and right-handed pitcher Caleb Kilian were acquired in exchange for two right-handed pitching prospects: Ramon Marquez and Marty Gair. Both players were expected to help elevate the team, but that unfortunately has not been the case recently.

The Phillies won’t be getting any help from Kilian any time soon, as he was placed on the injured list with an oblique strain after pitching for the fourth time in six days. Arraez, who began his tenure in Philadelphia with historic production, has fallen into one of the worst slumps of his career.

He has gon 0-for-15 over his last three games for just the third time in his career, as shared by Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic (subscription required). The last time he did so was August 2021, as droughts like this are incredibly rare for the contact-centric hitter.

“He’s not one of those guys that’s going to go 0-for-9 or 0-for-10,” interim manager Don Mattingly said, “and go, ‘Oh, what’s wrong with me?’ He’s always hit. He’s going to hit.”

Arraez is continuing to put the ball in play, only striking out once over those 15 at-bats. But luck has not been on his side, with a batting average on balls in play of .200 during his entire tenure with the Phillies. For the season, he has a healthy .318 BABIP.

Against the St. Louis Cardinals on Aug. 11, Arraez stepped to the plate with zero outs and the bases loaded after Bryce Harper drew a walk, the third straight free pass issued to begin the inning.

These are the exact situations the team acquired him for, as he has historic numbers when runners are in scoring position and there are fewer than two outs. He made contact on the second pitch, but the ball was hit straight at first baseman Alec Burleson, who started a 3-2-3 double play, effectively killing the rally.

“No doubt, (you’d) take him up there in these spots over the last few games,” Mattingly said. “No. 1, you know he’s going to put it in play. That’s just who he is. He’s going to hit the ball hard somewhere. He’s going to hit it — just today, (he) hit it right at that guy.”

It is far too early to worry about a player with the track record that Arraez has. But it will catch some people’s eyes that his batting average has dropped 10 points since making his debut last week.

He is still making contact; the ball is just finding defenders right now. Philadelphia certainly hopes the tide changes soon, because Arraez is key to their offense performing at peak levels.
