In this story:

The Philadelphia Phillies are now in a position to buy at the Aug. 1 trade deadline, thanks to a surge over the past six weeks.

With that, it means the Phillies will have to think about giving up talent, specifically in the farm system, to bring in Major League-ready talent to help them make a push for a National League Wild Card spot.

To get talent you have to give up prospects. MLB.com recently put together a list of one prospect that each team could move at the trade deadline.

The site selected pitcher Griff McGarry for the Phillies, their No. 4 prospect. Per MLB.com:

The reigning NL champs could be looking for starting pitching and outfield help before Aug. 1, and if they want to hold onto their Top 100 core, McGarry could garner some interest. On a pitch-by-pitch basis, the 24-year-old righty is as talented as they come for the Phils, with a fastball that can reach the upper-90s and three above-average secondaries in his curve, slider and changeup.

The Phillies selected McGarry in the fifth round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of Virginia.

Since then, McGarry has worked his way through the Phillies’ organization all the way up to Double-A Reading. This season he doesn’t have a decision in 11 starts, but he has a 3.63 ERA with 53 strikeouts and 27 walks.

With the Phillies’ organizational pitching depth, they could afford to send McGarry in a package that would bring them a bat like the Chicago Cubs’ Cody Bellinger or San Diego Padres slugger Juan Soto.
