All-Star Could Be Option For Red Sox If Trevor Story Misses Significant Time

Boston may need to add some depth after the unfortunate injury to Story

Boston Red Sox fans collectively held their breath Friday night.

The Red Sox have gotten off to a hot start this season and have looked better than many expected them to but had a tough night Friday despite a win over the Los Angeles Angels. Boston star shortstop Trevor Story attempted to make a diving stop and in the process injured his shoulder and was forced to leave the game.

At this point, it's unclear if Story will miss a significant amount of time. The injury didn't look good on first look, but he wasn't seen wearing a sling after the game which hopefully is a positive sign. He will have an MRI on Saturday which will ultimately determine the significance.

If Story is going to miss significant time, an addition could make a lot of sense. In the short term, Pablo Reyes could help fill in. Boston also could have young infielder Vaughn Grissom back soon who also could help.

While this is the case, adding a veteran to add even more depth couldn't hurt. One player who is out there in free agency who could make a lot of sense is two-time All-Star Jean Segura.

He is just 34 years old, can play all over the infield, and has had a solid 12-year big league career so far. Segura struggled offensively last season in 85 games with the Miami Marlins but was solid in 2022 with the Philadelphia Phillies where he clubbed 10 home runs, drove in 33 runs, and slashed .277/.336/.387 in 98 games.

Segura is a career .281 hitter who could fill in if Story misses a big chunk of time. He could be worked in slowly with Reyes taking the bulk of the shortstop duties to start and could provide some solid depth at a cheap price.

Hopefully, Story's results come back and he's completely okay and won't miss any time at all. If this doesn't end up being the case, a depth signing could make sense.
