Red Sox’s Wait for Roman Anthony, Trevor Story Just Got More Interesting

Changes are coming for the Boston Red Sox, to say the least.

Boston has three key cogs on minor league rehab assignments right now in Roman Anthony, Trevor Story and Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Anthony began his minor league rehab assignment with Double-A Portland on Aug. 18. Story began his minor league rehab assignment on Aug. 16 with Triple-A Worcester. Kiner-Falefa began his rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Aug. 19.

Before the Red Sox's series finale against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday, interim manager Chad Tracy shared that more news would be coming after the contest as the club charts a path forward for these three. All three are close to returning. Obviously, Anthony is the guy that Red Sox fans are watching the closest right now. While this is the case, he will not be activated when Boston faces off against the Miami Marlins over the next few days. Tracy shared that Anthony is going to continue his rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, as shared on X by Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com.

The Red Sox Have Some Decisions Coming

That's not all, though. Tracy also shared that both Story and Kiner-Falefa will be evaluated on Monday to see if they're ready to return.

"Roman Anthony will join WooSox on Tuesday to continue rehabbing. Trevor Story and Isiah Kiner-Falefa will be reevaluated tomorrow in Boston," Cotillo wrote.

When it comes to Anthony, this is the right call. This is a guy who hasn't played in a big league game since May 4. The Red Sox are 12 games above .500. They're in a great spot. Give him time to really get his bearings at the plate. That's what's most important. Boston is just fine in the standings. It can afford giving the young slugger a few more days to really get back on track.

The Red Sox have already had Story on his rehab assignment longer than he initially expected. There was a point when he thought he would be activated on Friday. But, the Red Sox kept him on his rehab assignment through the weekend. Again, a good call. The Red Sox keep winning. There's no reason to rush any of these guys back to make sure they're actually ready to contribute when they return.

Plus, Boston has difficult decisions to make when it activates these guys. Anthony Seigler has been a spark plug for Boston, but he hasn't been playing as much recently. Mickey Gasper has done well since getting promoted back to the majors, but he seems to be an easy guy to send down. Then, the Red Sox have Eli White and Jahmai Jones. Both have done well in Boston, but again, tough decisions are coming.
