The Cincinnati Reds received brutal injury news on Friday. Spencer Steer will miss the remainder of the season.

Steer underwent another examination on his injured right wrist Friday in Phoenix, and while a decision has not yet been made on whether he will need surgery, he no longer expects to return to the field this season.

“I’m pretty much done for the year, for sure,” Steer told Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Steer suffered a tear to the sheath that protects a tendon in his right wrist in late July. He remained hopeful that he could recover in time to return sometime in September, but Friday's examination appears to have ended those hopes.

“I had a feeling,” Steer said. “But I’m an optimistic person. So I figured there was maybe still a chance that I’d be able to come back on the back end of September and get in some games and at least finish the year healthy. It’s looking like that’s not the case anymore.”

Is Surgery Still Needed?

The next question is whether Steer will still require surgery. He is expected to be examined again in approximately two weeks, when there should be more information on whether surgery is needed or not.

“It’s still on the table,” Steer said. “The doctor feels it’s something that can still heal on its own. But it needs more time.”

According to Wittenmyer, Steer remains in a splint and is limited to conditioning work in the short term as the Reds wait to see whether the wrist can heal without surgery.

Regardless of that decision, Steer's 2026 season appears to be over. It's another significant blow for a Reds lineup that was already thin and struggling to consistently produce offensively.

Reds outfielder JJ Bleday has joined some impressive company through his first 100 games with the organization. Bleday has 20 home runs and 59 walks, becoming just the sixth Reds player since 1900 to reach both 20 homers and 50 walks within his first 100 games with the organization. The list includes Ken Griffey Jr., Adam Dunn, Greg Vaughn, Ron Gant and Bernie Carbo.

Bleday has been a nice pick up for the Reds. In 100 games this season, the 28-year-old is slashing .219/.333/.433 with 34 extra-base hits.

Bleday is under team control through 2029.
