Spencer Torkelson Has Stepped Up When the Tigers Needed Him Most

The Detroit Tigers have an important series finale against the Cleveland Guardians after splitting the first two games, with both teams scoring 10 runs combined across the two games. And one player who can help secure another series victory is at first base for the Tigers.
Spencer Torkelson has stepped up tremendously since the MLB Trade Deadline, and for a franchise that flipped both Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize, they're getting exactly what they need on offense from the former first overall pick.
In August, Torkelson is hitting .350 at the plate (14-for-40) and has come through again and again with runners in scoring position. Torkelson might not be known as the most clutch hitter, but in 2026, he's been one of the best with runners in scoring position.
Additionally, Torkelson is riding a six-game hitting streak, collecting two doubles and four RBIs over that streak. With Riley Greene placed on the injured list, getting production out of Torkelson was exactly what the doctor ordered for this franchise.
Torkelson's Hot Hitting Continues
In game two against the Guardians on Wednesday night, Torkelson stepped up to the plate with two runners on base, as the Tigers were already trailing 2-0 after a difficult first inning. Similar to his performance in the series opener, Torkelson hit a ball into the gap, driving in both runners and tying the game early on.

According to Tigers Data on X (formerly Twitter), that hit with runners in scoring position was Torkelson's eighth straight in as many appearances.
While there are still times when Torkelson will pop up in the infield or strike out now and then, his approach at the plate has seemed calmer, and it's showing in his plate appearances. Set to take on Parker Messick in the series finale, the slugger has a chance to get back into the home run column.
Torkelson has taken Messick deep once this season, but has struggled in his career, entering the game with a .200 AVG against Messick. If Torkelson gets another chance with runners on base in arguably one of the biggest series finales of the season, he needs to rise to the occasion as he has.
Messick allowed two home runs in his last outing; why not get Torkelson his 21st of the season? Surprisingly, most of his power has come against righties this season, having only taken three lefties deep. However, he does hold a .278 AVG against South Paws this season.
Since Max Clark has been called up, it's almost like pitchers have approached Torkelson differently with him hitting ahead of the rookie. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch put Torkelson ahead of Clark in game one of the series, and both collected base hits. It's a small detail, but one that's worked beneath their opponents' noses.
