76ers News: Tyrese Maxey Adds Another NBA All-Star Weekend Event

UPDATE: Tyrese Maxey will officially participate in the NBA Skills Challenge rather than the 3-Point Contest.
This year’s All-Star weekend is shaping up to be a big one for Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey.
According to Bleacher Report’s Chris Haynes, Maxey plans on participating in the NBA’s 3-Point Competition. It marks the first time Maxey will compete in the competition.
It’s no surprise Maxey landed an event to the contest. Since his sophomore effort, he’s developed into one of the most consistent shooters from beyond the arc.
The young guard has made quite the jump with his perimeter shooting since coming out of Kentucky. During his rookie effort, Maxey averaged 30 percent on 1.7 attempts per game. By year two, he made a jump to 43 percent on 4.1 attempts per game.
Last season, the star guard averaged 20 points per game while knocking down 43 percent of his threes on 6.2 attempts per outing. With that, Maxey was in the top five in the three-point percentage category for the year.
Through his first 44 games of the 2023-2024 NBA season, Maxey has turned up the volume with his three-point attempts. Spending nearly 38 minutes on the court per game, Maxey has attempted eight threes per outing. While his percentage has taken a dip to 38, he remains a 40 percent shooter throughout his four-year career.
Maxey joins stellar company in the contest. According to The Athletic, he’ll compete against Milwaukee’s Damian Lillard and Malik Beasley, Indiana’s Tyrese Haliburton, New York’s Jalen Brunson, Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell, and Utah’s Lauri Markkanen.
This year, Maxey competes in his first 3-Point Competition and will represent the Sixers in the All-Star Game. He becomes the first Sixer not named Joel Embiid to take part in the event since Ben Simmons’ three-year run as a Philly-based All-Star.
