Should the Chicago Bulls take a chance on Dillon Brooks?

Would the wingman be worth it?

It seems that the Chicago Bulls are still considering what moves they could make to improve their roster and erase the bitterness of missing the NBA Playoffs. An area that Bulls executive vice president Arturas Karnisovas said they’d explore working on is the team’s long range shooting, where they ranked last in both three-point attempts and frequency. While not a dead-eye shooter, controversial wingman Dillon Brooks could be a player to consider as a possible target.

3-and-D needed

The Bulls have the potent perimeter combination of Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan. While the two are scorers of the highest order, they don’t move the needle on the defensive end of the floor. This could be remedied by Brooks—a gritty, gutsy 3-and-D player who loves the idea of taking on the opposing team’s best players. And while his bark at the moment, is more profound than anything he did on the floor, especially in the recent playoff series between the Memphis Grizzlies and the Los Angeles Lakers (10.5 points on 31% shooting), there’s no denying his talent.

Mercurial wingman

Brooks has also recently outlived his welcome in Memphis, as the team reportedly stated that he would not be re-signed “under any circumstances.” This leaves the door wide open for a team like the Bulls to swoop in and sign the mercurial wingman.

With guards Coby White and Patrick Beverley hitting free agency, there’s room on the Bulls’ roster for a player of Brooks’ caliber. Yes, he does come with a certain amount of baggage, but at just 27 years of age, there’s an upside for a player with his track record. If the Bulls can sign him to a reasonable contract, he could be the piece that takes them from good to great next season.
