Jalen Duren Stays Silent, but in Reality, He Knows What’s Coming

Jalen Duren was again pressed on his future with the Detroit Piston when he visited his hometown.

It seems that the stalemate between the Detroit Pistons and Jalen Duren is still ongoing – and for the latter, he could be accepting the inevitable.

Duren probably expected to have his favored long-term maximum deal in place by late August. Instead, that hasn’t been the reality for the Pistons big man.

And when Duren returned to his hometown of Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania, for the area’s annual community day, he was surprised to find a street being named after him.

But there were obvious questions that he was forced to answer about his contract situation - one that has turned into a standoff with the Pistons.

He chose to remain silent and refuse to give anything away.

That silence surrounding the contract saga this offseason isn’t a shock. Speaking publicly about it wouldn’t do much to help his case, regardless of whether he keeps his comments positive or takes a different approach.

Pretty soon, Duren will understand that he won’t have a choice

Unless something special happens, Duren will likely sign a new deal with the Pistons, but not the lucrative long-term deal he was dreaming about.

While his regular-season performance last season was outstanding, it was offset by his subpar playoff showing, which saw the No. 1-seeded Pistons eliminated in the Eastern Conference semifinals by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Duren thinks he has done enough for the maximum deal, largely because he was an All-NBA Third Team selection and an All-Star last season, making him eligible for the $287.1 million supermax.

However, the Pistons are hesitant to meet Duren’s demand; instead, they are offering to sign him for between $30 million and $35 million annually, according to recent reports.

But it also seems Detroit isn't the only team sharing those thoughts. Duren has held talks with other NBA teams, including the Sacramento Kings and Los Angeles Lakers, but those talks quickly faded because they didn't seem to want to meet Duren’s demands either.

Duren isn’t budging. But neither are the Pistons

After a poor debut playoff appearance, Duren is standing firm on his contract demands. But with limited - well, close to no more options. The Pistons are his only option.

The Pistons still value Duren and, along with Cade Cunningham, view him as a cornerstone player. They still expect him back next season, especially with Paul Reed currently their only other option at center.

Maybe for Duren, while he glows in having a street named after him in his home town, he can also glow in being one of the main components to Detroit.
