Detroit Pistons Announce Major Plans for 2024 Offseason

As the Detroit Pistons prepared for their 2023-2024 season finale against the San Antonio Spurs, a report that touched on the futures of some of the organization’s most prominent decision-makers surfaced.

James Edwards of The Athletic suggested that the Pistons could be in the market for a new President of Basketball Operations. While many believed that a potential coaching or GM change could be in the works, it seems the Pistons will continue to stand behind Troy Weaver and Monty Williams, but offer an additional helping hand as they look to turn things around.

On Monday, the Pistons announced their major plans heading into the offseason.

“This past season has been incredibly difficult and frustrating for our fans, players, and our entire organization,” Pistons owner Tom Gores said via a press release. “We will continue to invest in our core group of young players and surround them with the right complimentary talent.”

The Pistons have been rebuilding for several seasons. After finishing with a 14-68 record this year, Detroit concludes the year with the Eastern Conference’s worst record for the second year in a row. Wins and losses won’t always tell the entire story about the direction of a rebuild, but it’s clear Detroit has not been on the best path forward.

“I am committed to doing whatever it takes to building a winning team,” Gores added. “Nothing is off the table. As tough as this season has been, a bright future is available to us. It’s in our power to get this right, and we will. This is a pivotal summer for the Pistons.”

The sooner Detroit gets help, the better. After struggling in 2023-2024, the Pistons have favorable lottery odds, which could land them a top-three pick, if not the first-overall. Then, the Pistons are expected to have the most cap space when free agency rolls around.

It’s clear that the leaders in the clubhouse haven’t made the right moves to build a competitive team around its star player, Cade Cunningham. While the Pistons will continue to support the current front office, there will be a shift in leadership.
