Why This Player Could Be the Rockets’ Biggest X-Factor

Even though the Houston Rockets had a quiet offseason, they still have one of the deeper rosters in the NBA. The Rockets have a ton of great bench players, but which one will be their most important one this season? For me, though, it is Tari Eason.

Eason has always been one of my favorite players on this Rockets roster because of his mentality. He does all the dirty work for the team; he defends, rebounds, creates extra possessions, and can knock down open shots. He is the perfect role player, and he was just rewarded with a payday to stay with the Rockets long-term. If Eason can stay healthy and consistent, I think he could become one of the best bench players in the entire league.

Houston Could Bring Back the “Terror Twins”

A few seasons ago, Tari Eason and Amen Thompson became a nightmarish duo on the defensive side of the floor. This was one of the Rockets’ biggest advantages, and after unleashing them together, fans quickly began calling them the “Terror Twins.”

The duo reminded me of the Bash Brothers from Mighty Ducks 2. They could switch onto almost anyone, pressure the ball, jump passing lanes like free safeties, and turn their defense into offense. Both are very athletic defenders, with size and length, and they changed the dynamic for the Rockets, especially when the team needed an energy boost.

We didn't get to see that same version of that combination last season. Eason was dealing with injuries, while Thompson had a much bigger offensive workload after Fred VanVleet tore his ACL.

With Eason healthy and Thompson having more help around him, I expect that defensive intensity to pick back up. That's where Eason's value goes beyond his individual numbers. He makes Houston more aggressive and disruptive. When he and Thompson are on the court together, the Rockets have the personnel to completely overwhelm opposing second units.

The Three-Point Shot Is the Key

Eason already has the defensive part of the equation down; that’s his calling card. The biggest thing for him now is becoming more consistent offensively, particularly from three. There was a stretch last season where Eason was legitimately one of the best three-point shooters in basketball for roughly two months. Then he went absolutely ice cold.

That's been part of the Eason experience. You can see what he can become, but the next step is putting it together for an entire season. Consistency is key. Houston has plenty of players capable of scoring and carrying the offensive load; they just need Eason to be consistent and to steadily improve his shooting.

If he can become a reliable three-point shooter while maintaining everything he already does defensively, he's basically the prototypical 3-and-D forward every contender wants and needs.

Eason Can Be the Difference-Maker Off Houston's Bench

The biggest questions with Eason going into the season are pretty simple: Can he stay healthy, and can he stay consistent?

If the answer to both is yes, I think he could have his best season yet.

The Rockets don't need Eason to completely change his game. They need the healthy version of him that defends multiple positions and hits the three-ball. Houston's depth is going to be one of its biggest strengths this season, but Eason brings something different to that second unit.
