On This Day: Jordan, Barkley Each Score 42 Points in NBA Finals

Despite the Suns ultimately losing, Barkley led Phoenix with 42 points in a dominant performance.

On this day in 1993, Phoenix Suns big man Charles Barkley and Chicago Bulls guard Michael Jordan each scored 42 points in Game 2 of the 1993 NBA Finals.

According to NBA.com, that marked the first time in NBA Finals history that opposing players each scored 40 or more points in a Finals game.

Down 0-1 after a 100-92 loss in Game 1, the Suns tried their best to even up the series before it went back to the Chicago. Despite a 42-13-4 line from Barkley, the Suns were forced to travel to the Windy City down 0-2.

Of course, there's no shame in losing to Jordan or the powerful team the Bulls displayed at that time. Jordan finished with a 42-12-9 stat-line on 50% shooting and two steals.

Barkley played 46 minutes, the most out of both squads. He also sank 10-12 free throws as well.

“In Game 2, I played as well as I could play, and Michael just outplayed me. That was probably the first time in my life that I felt like there was a better basketball player in the world than me, to be honest with you," said Barkley on the ESPN documentary titled "The Last Dance".

The Suns would ultimately take two-of-three games in Chicago, back when the NBA still used the 2-3-2 series of home/away games. Phoenix forced a Game 6 back home where the Bulls ultimately won 99-98.

Also on this day four years later would be the famous "Flu Game" Jordan had.
