It’s Hard to Argue With this ‘Expiration Date’ Take on the 49ers

In this story:
Is time running out for this current San Francisco 49ers core to finally win a Super Bowl?
It’s the dreaded question. It’s one that San Francisco won’t be able to avoid unless they win it all with this current core, who have reached multiple NFC Championship Games and come up short twice in the Super Bowl.
The Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch era reaches double figures this season, so naturally, much of the core built during their earlier years, with Brock Purdy being the obvious exception, are now in their late 20s or early 30s. Time is beginning to run out for several key players who are entering, or could already be past, their primes.
"The fact that they continue to be contenders with this aging roster, that they haven't dramatically retooled, I think it's delaying the retooling, and there's going to be a point where they just have to do a massive overhaul and not hang on to this guy one more year because maybe we can get over the hump," discussed Mike Florio and Michael Holley on their show.
"They're still, for the most part, other than the quarterback position, it's gone from Jimmy Garoppolo to Brock Purdy, but this feels like a team that's had its soul constructed away from the quarterback position, the George Kittles of the world, the Nick Bosas, the Fred Warners, the Dre Greenlaws, and it just feels like the expiration date is coming for all of them."

And in truth, it’s not wrong. There’s plenty of skepticism surrounding this team heading into the coming season. Add in free agent Mike Evans, who is now 33 and coming off a bad 2025, and this season, perhaps alongside 2027, could represent the final true attempts to win with this current core.
It’s clear the 49ers are putting their chips in, but more notably, they’re not sacrificing significant draft capital for future seasons. That suggests they understand a rebuild, or at least a major retooling, is coming when these veterans either decline further, retire or move on.
The far-from-ideal outcome is that this roster could always be remembered as one of the most talented to never get it done. However, there are some names, namely George Kittle and Fred Warner, who will likely remain with the franchise until the end of their careers and go down as one-team players.
Sooner rather than later, the next era of the 49ers will have to be prioritized. The question is when the 49ers’ front office will decide it’s time to make that call.
