How the 49ers Could end up Signing Matt Ryan

In this story:
So many avenues can play out for the 49ers when it comes to the quarterback position.
One of those avenues is a worst-case scenario. What happens if it takes longer than the initial six-month recovery/return for Brock Purdy? Or what happens if he comes back and quickly has a setback?
Another thing to consider is if Trey Lance and Sam Darnold are underwhelming throughout training camp. Any doubt or instilled concerns from both of them will put the 49ers into a corner. The worst-case scenario is if Purdy is not ready by August or September along with Lance and Darnold creating doubt. The 49ers will have to seriously consider adding another quarterback into the fold.
This is how the 49ers could end up signing Matt Ryan.
If any of those scenarios come to fruition, then the 49ers are going to be scrambling to add another quarterback. Ryan makes the most sense, because he won’t cost much at all -- the Colts are still paying him -- and they won’t need to forfeit any draft capital. Besides, a trade for a quarterback will force the 49ers into spot where they will have to overspend in draft picks since they will be relatively desperate for one. At least Ryan can come in cheap and not take long to be integrated into Kyle Shanahan’s offense.
Of course, Ryan will need to still be available by training camp. Retirement isn't off the table for him, and he could always be signed elsewhere. But I think there is a strong chance he remains a free agent for the next four months. There isn't a rush for him to go somewhere and I doubt he wants to be a part of an entire training camp at this point of his career.
Now, Ryan was pitiful last season. He easily was the worst quarterback not named Zach Wilson as he registered 15 fumbles and 13 interceptions. A literal walking turnover is what Ryan was. However, it’s not 100 percent on him with how poor he and the Colts offense was. Their offensive line was mediocre as Ryan was sacked 38 times, and the weapons on offense were minimal. Running back Jonathan Taylor and wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. are not a sufficient number of weapons for Ryan.
With the 49ers, he gets a drastically better offensive line and array of talent to throw to. Not to mention the enormous upgrade he has in an offensive coordinator with Shanahan in an offense that he knows he can fit well in. Should the worst-case scenario I mentioned earlier occur or similar, then I certainly see a reality where Ryan signs with the 49ers. Given the luck at quarterback the 49ers have had over the years, it is definitely within the realm of possibility.
