In this story:

Brock Purdy was absent from Sunday's training camp practice.

It's part of his throwing schedule that the 49ers have him on as a means to not overwork him. A wise and cautious approach to take with him as he makes his way back from his elbow injury. So far, Purdy has participated in two practices and has taken all the reps with the first-team.

Today was the first time that Kyle Shanahan got to assess and give his thoughts on how Purdy looked in his early performances at camp.

“I think he's done great. He has come back. He's had no arm troubles. He's been totally healthy. I think he's getting all his timing back, his rhythm. I was really impressed with him in his two practices," said Shanahan.

It may be just two practices, but it is still an excellent sign that Purdy came out of practice with zero issues. This will be something to measure as he continues to take part in practice. If he keeps this up with no concerns, then by the time the 49ers reassess him in the next week, he might end up practicing daily with no restrictions or limitations.

There was a time in the offseason, especially back in March when his surgery was delayed, where Purdy was feared to miss a chunk of training camp. But not only has he made it on time, he's doing so without any drawback. Much of that has to do with the work Purdy put in to get himself to this point. The plan and schedule laid out to him in his rehab was executed with pinpoint precision.

"Brock's just so detailed and committed in everything he does, so he didn't miss one day," said Shanahan. "Every rep that he takes to get better in his health, he is just deliberate in everything he does. How committed he was to doing that, to being here, to going down to Florida, to being in Arizona. If he was going to have a setback and something went wrong was the only way we felt he wasn't going to be ahead of schedule by what he does.”

Without a doubt, there was confidence that Purdy would be back for camp to Shanahan and likely others in the organization as well. They made the right choice in not putting a concrete date in his return or else it would have been thrown in their faces and probably even stirred up a bit of panic.

Purdy is set to return to practice Monday and Tuesday before taking another rest day.
