Deshaun Watson Provided Glimpse Of New Look Browns Offense

New Browns offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey is already implementing his philosophy in building the offense for 2024.

It's the question everyone wants an answer to: what will the Browns offense look like in 2024?

With new offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey joining the fold, he and head coach Kevin Stefanski have spent the last few months putting their heads together to combine their philosophies and design an offense best suited for star quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Watson himself is still working his way back from shoulder surgery after fracturing the glenoid in his throwing shoulder last fall. That means, as he arrived in Berea limited for the start of the offeseason program this week, he's going to spend a lot of time studying the new playbook.

On Tuesday, the 28-year-old signal caller provided a brief peak behind the curtain regarding what fans should expect to see from the Browns offense in 2024.

“It’s really good," said Watson. "I mean, a lot of opportunities for the receivers to be able to really showcase their skills. A lot of guys moving around, a lot of guys being able to play different spots and then [for] myself to just be free and not really kind of controlled in a sense. It’s really just gotta go out there and be able to, you know, showcase, spread offense, throw it around, run around and make some plays happen. So that’s very exciting for myself.”

Reading between the lines, it sounds like motion will be heavily featured in Cleveland's offense next season – something they utilized very minimally in 2023. The mention of a "spread style offense" is should also grab people's attention. During Stefanski's four-year tenure, the Browns have been near the top of the league in 12 personnel (two tight end sets) usage. With the addition of Jerry Jeudy this offseason though, it seems fair to reason the team will feature a lot more three wide receiver sets featuring Amari Cooper, Jeudy and Elijah Moore.

Based on Watson's comments, it also sounds like he'll be able to play more loose and take things as they come, rather than be bound to a more structured style of offense. Earlier this offseason the Browns star admitted on his podcast, QB Unplugged, that he operates better when he can play more "off script." This new offense seems to already be giving him more leeway.

Jul 27, 2022; Pittsford, NY, USA; Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey talks with Josh Allen

Dorsey has worked with some of the top QBs in football over the course of his career, including Cam Newton and more recently Josh Allen. The hope for Cleveland is that he can unlock an older version of Watson, from his days in Houston when he was top NFL's top passer and a top five quarterback.

Based on the early returns, it sounds like Watson likes what he sees from Dorsey and Stefanski's brainchild. Now it's just about getting him back on the field and integrated into it this offseason.
