Chargers Roster Spotlights: RJ Mickens, A Sneaky Returning Key Contributor

RJ Mickens, born on July 10, 2001, in Irving, Texas, grew up in a football family, being the son of longtime standout NFL DB Ray Mickens. With these roots, Mickens took his talents to Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas, where he played both offense and defense, notching 1,092 yards and 14 touchdowns while also producing 211 tackles with six going for a loss, two sacks, 32 pass deflections, eight interceptions, two fumble recoveries, and eight forced fumbles on defense. These elite career numbers saw Mickens ranked as a four-star prospect, according to 247Sports.

This led Mickens to commit to Clemson, where he played sparingly as a freshman. As a sophomore, he collected two interceptions, proving quickly to the team that he could be a real stalwart in the backend of a defense.

Moving on to 2022, his junior season, he added another three interceptions to his resume while adding 48 tackles, giving the team a reliable deep and box safety. 2023 had Mickens in a statistical slump, recording no interceptions on the season. He returned to school for his final year of eligibility and had his best year, recording two picks and 75 tackles (six of which were for loss).

Mickens would go into the 2025 NFL Draft, where teams viewed him as a Day 3 safety who could instantly compete for playing time, even with his limited athletic traits. His football IQ and instincts made up for his subpar testing numbers, allowing Mickens to be a real prospect in the eyes of NFL teams.

The Los Angeles Chargers were looking to get younger at the Safety position and drafted the Clemson product in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Mickens saw action in 12 games, proving to be a key contributor down the stretch of his first NFL season.

RJ Mickens' 2026 Season Outlook

RJ Mickens finds himself in an intriguing spot going into year two of his NFL career. The Bolts drafted Genesis Smith in the fourth round, while still having Derwin James Jr., Elijah Molden and Tony Jefferson as veteran playmakers.

While the Chargers could keep five safeties on the final 53-man roster, Mickens will be in a tough battle to keep the same role that he had during his rookie season. If he does continue in that role, look for Mickens to once again be a solid contributor for a Bolts defense that relies heavily on its safety talent.
