Former CB Sounds Off On Chiefs Draft Day Needs

The Kansas City Chiefs have been told they "need" certain things in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft, but what does former cornerback Devin McCourty believe the franchise can't leave out?

The 2025 NFL Draft has been the main topic of conversation across media platforms and within the National Football League. With the Kansas City Chiefs set to pick at number 31 overall in the first round, several have chimed in on which way the franchise should lean with their draft selections.

The big standout going into draft day, as been highly discussed and mocked, has been addressing the offensive line. While the Chiefs were able to find their way through the regular season with the offensive line, the woes came quickly on the biggest stage of them all.

Throughout the 2024 campaign, quarterback Patrick Mahomes was protected the least amount he has been in his career, getting sacked a total of 36 times. According to former cornerback Devin McCourty, who joined Mike Florio on Pro Football Talk, the franchise can't leave the draft without adding pieces to the O-Line.

"Not having a tackle, I think Mahomes is a guy that wants to hold the ball a little bit more, he wants to move around in the pocket, that you're going to need tackles to protect," McCourty said. "If they don't have that, I think it showed that you don't get to see the true value and magic of Mahomes."

The franchise brought in Jaylon Moore to solidify the left side, as he shined in the five games he started last season with the San Fransisco 49ers. Given that Mahomes likes to move around the pocket, as McCourty stated, Moore has shown he can hold down the left side with his quick feet and big presence.

McCourty also believes the Chiefs could invest in a cornerback for the extra defensive attack. As a former cornerback himself, McCourty highlights certain holes that the Chiefs had, even if they didn't know they had them.

"When they won the Super Bowl the year before, we watched L'Jarius Sneed and McDuffie dominate on the defensive side," McCourty said. "When they lost L'Jarius Sneed I thought that would be a huge impact... I thought it showed up more in the Super Bowl."

McDuffie has a ton of upside, should the Chiefs exercise that fifth-year option before May 1 to keep him around, to where the needs seem to primarily lie on adding guards, tackles, and potentially a late round tight end.
