The Washington Commanders came into the free agency period armed with a serious amount of cap space, which allowed them to be very proactive in its early stages. As such, the team signed a host of players for the new regime, one of which was Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Nick Allegretti.

Having been with the franchise for five years (2019-2023), Allegretti has three Super Bowl rings as he played a majority of his snaps as a special teamer. Allegretti only started 13 out of his 74 regular season games for the Chiefs, and as it turns out, that played a role in his move to the nation's capital.

Allegretti wasn't content with being a backup, and when the chance arose to come to the Commanders and fight for a starting role, that was all the lineman needed to sign on the dotted line.

"I have a ton of respect for the guys in Kansas City," Allegretti said. "I enjoyed my role there, but I think I had gotten to the point in my career where I wanted to come and be a starter in Week 1. That's my goal coming to Washington."

While being a back up and witnessing the greatness of Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs organization over the last five years would have been somethig special, naturally, Allegretti wanted more and in Washington, he is likely to get that.

Winning three Super Bowls in five years likely isn't achievable given the franchise's current situation, but the chance to be a consistent starter is all Allegretti wants...and he could get it.

The Commanders offensive line last season left a lot to be desired as Sam Howell was sacked 65 times (second-most in the league). With a new quarterback (we think) coming in via the No. 2 draft pick, the protection needs to be far better.

That's where Allegretti and his experience comes in and is likely one of the reasons the Commanders signed him.

It has been a good offseason thus far, with the Commanders adding several key pieces to their roster as the new era looks to begin with a bang.

As for Allegretti, all he wants is to have a chance at securing a starting role on Kliff Kingsbury's offense, and by all accounts, that's exactly what he's going to get.
