Once again, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni has turned to the college ranks to add to his staff of assistants.

According to ESPN college football senior writer, Pete Thamel, the Eagles are hiring Jacksonville State assistant coach Mike DiAngelo in a defensive quality control role. DiAngelo coached tight ends and receivers at Jacksonville State, which is a Division I football program located in Jacksonville, Ala.

DiAngelo has no professional experience. He did, however, spend six seasons coaching with Sirianni’s brother, Mike Sirianni, at Washington & Jefferson College, a Divison III powerhouse located in western Pennsylvania.

Mike Sirianni has been the head coach at W&J since 2003, compiling a record of 176-42.

DiAngelo coached there from 2007-13, serving in a variety of roles, including the secondary coach, quarterbacks and receivers coach, special teams coordinator, and the program’s strength and conditioning coordinator.

He has also coached at Arizona, Illinois, and the University of Louisiana Monroe.

Nick Sirianni went down the college road shortly after accepting the Eagles’ head coaching post two years ago, when he hired Brian Johnson to be his quarterback coach. Johnson had been the offensive coordinator at the University of Florida at the time.

Johnson was promoted to offensive coordinator in March after Shane Steichen left to be the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts.

Sirianni also hired D.J. Eliot to coach linebackers, Taver Johnson to coach the secondary, and, reportedly, Tyler Yerk, whose role has yet to be defined.

Johnson had been a lifelong college coach, though he spent a year as an assistant special team coach with the Browns in 2004 and one year as an offensive assistant with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021.

Eliot takes over for Nick Rallis, who followed former Eagles coordinator Jonathan Gannon to Arizona. He had previous ties to Temple University as the coordinator and outside linebackers coach in 2022.

Yelk also has ties to Temple, where he spent 2019-21 coaching primarily safeties.

“You’re just looking for good coaches no matter where you find them,” said Sirianni. “I had a lot of success getting with guys at the college side.”
