Six Eagles Who Solidified Their Spot on the 53-Man Roster in Preseason vs. Patriots

The Philadelphia Eagles have to send in their initial 53-man roster in a week from Sunday.

Jobs still are on the line, yet there are some roster spots that were solidified on Saturday night in the second preseason game. This is why the Week 2 of the preseason was massive for the second team players, as it was an opportunity for them to showcase why they deserved to be on the roster.

Who basically locked up their roster spots? These players are expected to be on the 53-man roster when the Eagles announce it next week.

Will Shipley (RB)

Shipley was essentially a roster lock heading into this game, but he slammed the door on any possibility he doesn't make it. He hit the hole hard and with authority in the second preseason game, taking advantage of the massive holes created by his offensive line.

Shipley had 51 yards in the first quarter and a touchdown run in the second. He looked poised when carrying the football and has more confidence reading the hole than at this time last year.

Bottom line -- Shipley is a roster lock. He'll be the RB3, even though the opportunities are scarce with Saquon Barkley and Tank Bigsby ahead of him.

Tanner McKee (QB)

McKee should have the QB2 job after the atrocious performance from Andy Dalton on Saturday night. He was the better quarterback and clearly had more command of the offense than Dalton -- and was playing with third team most of the game.

McKee went 16-of-22 for 173 yards and two touchdowns (125.8 rating) in the game, and went 5-of-6 for 64 yards on third down with a touchdown (150.7 rating). This was the most poised McKee has looked all summer, as he backed up his claim to be the QB2.

Theer shouldn't be a QB2 battle this week. McKee earned the job.

Willie Lampkin (C/G)

Watching Lampkin block opponents Saturday night and continuing to wear out defensive tackles, how do the Eagles leave him off the roster? The Eagles started Lampkin at center in game two of the preseason and he was able to get off the snap quick and create massive holes in the A-gap.

This cames a week after Lampkin excelled at guard in the preseaosn opener, showcasing he can play both spots in an NFL game. The Eagles interior of the offensive line isn't a concern anymore,a nd Lampkin is a huge part of that.

He should be on this team next week.

Ty Robinson (DT)

Robinson has "come alive" over the past few weeks after being on "life support," per Vic Fangio. He didn't need much convincing on Saturday with a dominant first half -- totaling four pressures, two sacks, and three quarterback hits.

The Eagles were waiting for Robinson to break out after a poor rookie campaign, and he's done taht with three sacks in six quarters of preseason action. Robinson should take a seat for game No. 3, as he's on the roster.

Smael Mondon (LB)

Vic Fangio has said inside linebacker is the deepest position on the Eagles, and looking at his top three linebackers he can back up that claim.

The fourth linebacker is pretty good too. Mondon had a good pressure on a blitz on Tommy Devito early in the first quarter, a play DeVito got away from him (Mondon just didn't finish the play) and ran for the first down. This was still an impressive read to the quarterback by Mondon, one that will play on NFL Sundays.

Mondon was essentially a lock to make teh team because of his play on special teams, but he solidified his spot on Saturday.

Joshua Weru (EDGE)

I still think Weru making this team is an overreaction, but how can the Eagles just let this player go through the waiver wire? Some team in the NFL is going to claim Weru based on watching the film from Saturday night.

The move Weru made to get past Dametrious Crownover took notice across the league, and teams are hoping Roseman leaves Weru available to claim. Roseman is too smart of a general manager to leave that up to chance, knowing teams are thinking about getting their hands on someone who can help the Eagles this year.

Putting on my GM cap here, Weru makes this team for that reason.
