Can Giants Survive Rams CB Trent McDuffie’s Lockdown Coverage?

With the 2026 NFL schedule release event less than two months away, we’re going to take a look each day at one newcomer on each of the New York Giants’ opponents whose presence could potentially create the biggest headache for Big Blue.

When the New York Giants face the Los Angeles Rams this season, they must handle an extremely high-powered offense led by quarterback Matthew Stafford and his weapons.

They will also face a defense featuring a revamped defensive secondary, a group that has a proven track record of making life difficult for NFL perimeter offenses.

The Rams were able to re-sign their safety Kamren Curl to a three-year, $36 million contract. They also signed the former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Jalen Watson to a three-year, $51 million deal.

But the true splash they made this offseason–and the thing that should worry Giants fans the most–is their acquisition of Kansas City Chiefs lockdown cornerback, Trent McDuffie, who they signed to the richest contract for a cornerback in NFL history.

The thing that makes McDuffie so valuable is his flexibility in positions. He gives a defensive coordinator the ultimate movable chess piece, allowing him to gain a tactical advantage over offenses by where he lines up McDuffie.

The most obvious use for McDuffie is to shadow the opposing team's best wide receiver throughout the field.

What makes him good is his ability to be physical while also being fluid in his movement, which allows him to run with receivers.

He is one of the premier man-to-man defenders in the NFL, with elite-level pattern match ability. He is a nightmare for receivers who rely on their route-running ability to create separation.

He plays much bigger than his 5-foot-11 frame would suggest; he is fast, intelligent, and he has a nasty streak about him.

The Giants will have to worry about him locking on to Malik Nabers like a pit bull and chasing him around everywhere that he goes during the game. According to the Next Gen Stats, his 17 minutes of tight coverage (defined by being less than a yard away from the receiver) were fifth overall in the league last year.

It does not matter if McDuffie is outside wide or in the slot. He can play any Giants receiver straight up. This ability lets the other 10 defenders help everywhere else.

During the 2021 Super Bowl run, the Rams had Jalen Ramsey, who essentially served as a defensive Swiss Army knife in the secondary.

You can envision the Rams utilizing McDuffie the same way. If he is not shadowing a particular receiver, you may find him outside the field or boundary corner.

Inside, he can line up as your nickelback or big nickel. He can also operate in the dime package or line up as the hash safety in the deep third.

This level of versatility is what made that 2021 defense so difficult to move the ball against, and Jalen Ramsey was the perfect fit for that defense. Now, Trent McDuffie comes in to provide a very similar look.

While Jalen Ramsey used size and athleticism, McDuffie will use his athleticism mixed with an elite-level IQ for the game. He has top-notch route recognition abilities and studies the game tirelessly.

That is the work ethic that has made him one of the best cornerbacks in the league, and he will be a major problem for the Giants when they face off against the Rams.
