Jets Not Expected to Make Breece Hall Trade, For Now

The New York Jets made a very good call giving Breece Hall the franchise tag this offseason.

In this story:

It would be a pretty big shock if Breece Hall isn't playing for the New York Jets in 2026.

New York entered the offseason with questions around the young running back. He was scheduled to head to the open market and would've been the top running back available in free agency. But the Jets handed Hall the franchise tag instead. Reports have pointed to the two sides coming together after the upcoming 2026 National Football League Draft to at least discuss a long-term deal.

With Hall having the franchise tag, the Jets technically could trade him if they wanted to, but that just doesn't seem like a likely or good option. Fortunately, Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer tossed cold water on the idea.

The Jets made the right call with Breece Hall

"I’d be surprised, Paul. I just don’t think you can get the sort of value for a running back on a franchise tag that would make it worth everyone’s while to lose another of your best players," Breer wrote. "My sense is they’ll make a real run at extending him. And maybe if those talks don’t go well, and the team’s struggling in midseason, you look at dealing him at the deadline."

There's no reason for the Jets to even consider this idea at this point. If the Jets wanted to move on from Hall, they easily could have. There was interest ahead of the 2025 trade deadline and then New York could've let Hall head to free agency if it wanted. Instead, the Jets committed to him. New York didn't just give him the transition tag, but instead the franchise tag to make it even more difficult for another team to come in and try to snatch him.

While rumors — and mainly speculation — have swirled around Hall over the last year about his future with the Jets, every step of the way New York has done something to make sure Hall would be in town. Trade rumors began last offseason, but the Jets obviously didn't move him. The same can be said about the 2025 trade deadline as well.

New York has shown over and over again that it loves Hall and giving him the franchise tag was a tool in order to keep him in town, not prepare for some sort of trade. Hall is going to be under center for the Jets in Week 1 action, whether that is on the franchise tag or a long-term deal.
