For Jameson Williams, Rapport with Jared Goff Will 'Take Longer'

Ben Johnson addresses struggles of Jameson Williams.

The Detroit Lions are remaining patient with the development of wide receiver Jameson Williams.

Despite his struggles against the Baltimore Ravens, Detroit's coaching staff believes that once the chemistry and rapport between Williams and Goff develops more, the results out on the field will produce satisfactory evaluations from supporters.

"Time on task still. I know it's beating a dead horse by saying that. But, you know, some guys take longer than others to develop a rapport with," Johnson said of Williams. "And we just, we frankly aren't there yet. So, we'll continue to work on it. And, it's going to come. And, when it does come, I think we're all going to be pleased."

Against Baltimore, Williams was targeted on six occasions, but unfortunately did not secure a single reception.

Despite a game that didn't produce statistical results, Johnson believes that continued weeks of stacking good, solid work will eventually produce consistent play on Sundays.

"I think I've alluded to it before with him. Consistent days stacking up back-to-back-to-back," Johnson said of what's needed for Williams. "And, that's really all we're focused on with him. So, we'll continue to see improvement from his play, as he continues to get more."

Williams' sheer speed is a factor that makes developing a connection a little more challenging, as not too many players on Detroit's roster can simply blow past defenders.

Johnson noted, "Throwing the ball down the field to him is completely different than anybody else that we have on this roster."

When asked, Detroit's third-year defensive coordinator indicated there are opportunities for the second-year wideout to be more involved, and possibly not in the passing game.

"This guy loves football," said Johnson. "So, the more we can get him involved, the better off I think we're going to be."
