Lions Believe Wide Receivers Room Is Best Since Dan Campbell Hired

Throughout training camp, multiple Detroit Lions wide receivers have stepped up and made plays.

Head coach Dan Campbell indicated before the final practice leading up to the preseason opener that the receivers room was the best he had observed since he became the Lions coach back in 2021.

Each day, a new player has emerged to contribute and help the offense. For the former NFL tight end, performance on special teams could also be a deciding factor for a wideout battling for a roster spot.

“An all-out battle. That receiver room, this is the best receiver room we've had since I've been here in camp, top to bottom," Campbell said. "I mean, those guys are gifted. It's a really good crew, man. And they're all pretty tough, they're all a little bit different the way they're built. And every one of those guys has flashed on one day or another, has done something pretty damn good. So man, honestly, this thing's up for grabs.

"After you get to the ones you just talked about that we know are up there, there is no telling," Campbell added further. "And special teams is going to have a huge factor. That's the other thing, man, I'll just give you an example. Tay Martin, man, makes plays every day. And he's intriguing on offense, but he makes special teams plays every day. And that's important to us. And he's not the only one.”

It is presumed that second-year wideout Isaac TeSlaa is going to be the Lions third wideout on the depth chart behind offensive staples Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams.

Behind the former third-round pick are Greg Dortch, Tom Kennedy, Cedrick Wilson, Tay Martin, Malik Cunningham, Dominic Lovett, Lucky Jackson and Tarik Black.

Wilson, 30, has also made an impression in his first camp with the Lions. A journeyman wideout, Wilson has 126 career receptions for1,524 yards and 12 touchdowns in his career.

After a stint with the Dolphins, the veteran is making plays and was called a "headsy" player last week by Campbell.

"They come in here, they compete. They're not entitled, they just go work, man and that's what he does. And by the way, his special teams reps are pretty good too," said Campbell. "I mean, for a receiver, he can do some stuff. And his tape says that too.”
