Packers Take Lineman in Peter Schrager’s NFL Mock Draft

The Green Bay Packers have a big need at offensive tackle. Peter Schrager filled it with one of the biggest prospects in the NFL Draft, Georgia’s Amarius Mims.

GREEN BAY, Wis. – For each of the past five seasons, NFL.com’s Peter Schrager correctly predicted the winner of the Super Bowl. Will he correctly predict the Green Bay Packers’ first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft?

In his first mock of the year, which is based on his “sources around the league,” Schrager went with “massive” Georgia offensive tackle Amarius Mims.

“Mims has tremendous upside despite a lack of experience at Georgia,” he wrote. “He’s shown enticing flashes in big games. This is a deep wide receiver and O-line draft. The Packers got plenty of production out of their young WRs and TEs last season; they bypass taking a first-round wideout and grab a gifted OT prospect.”

Mims measured 6-foot-7 3/4 and 340 pounds at the Scouting Combine. With a 5.07 in the 40-yard dash, he showed some explosive athleticism, as well. Paired with 36 1/8-inch arms, Mims dominated at Georgia. In 2023, he allowed zero sacks and just one pressure.

NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein compared him to Donovan Smith, who has played at a Pro Bowl level at left tackle throughout his nine-year NFL career.

The knock on Mims is inexperience, which is why a player with such an exceptional skill-set could be on the board for the Packers at No. 25. He started eight games at Georgia in his career. He missed six games in 2023 with an ankle injury, then dropped out of the Combine with a hamstring injury. So, can he stay healthy? And when will he be ready to start?

“I know I don’t have the amount of starts and snaps as many guys here, but I feel I’m just as prepared and just as good everybody else here,” Mims said at the Scouting Combine.

The Packers are interested – he took a predraft visit to Green Bay. He could play right tackle if the Packers want to send Zach Tom to center. Or he could challenge Rasheed Walker at left tackle.

Mims was the sixth offensive tackle off the board. Iowa defensive back Cooper DeJean went to the Eagles at No. 22.

Cornerbacks Kool-Aid McKinstry and Nate Wiggins were available, as were interior linemen Graham Barton, Zach Frazier and Jackson Powers-Johnson.

Who did the Bears draft alongside Caleb Williams? Which quarterback did the Vikings select without moving up? And which lineman landed with the Lions?
