The Complicated Nature of Panthers Legend Cam Newton's 2027 HOF Case

The case for the former league MVP to make it into Canton isn't exactly straight forward.

Five former NFL players achieved football immortality this past weekend when they were officially inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton.

Legends of the game like former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees and Arizona Cardinals wideout Larry Fitzgerald both received their coveted gold jackets alongside Carolina Panthers icon Luke Kuechly.

With this year's class officially in the books, everybody's attention has now turned to the list of names that will officially become eligible for the HOF for the first time next year, a list that includes another Carolina icon, Cam Newton.

Hall of Fame Case in Doubt?

No single player personified the Panthers throughout the 2010s as Newton did. The former first-overall pick and eventual NFL MVP took the league by storm from the moment he came out of the tunnel at Bank of America Stadium as a rookie, and his impact on both Carolina and the league as a whole is still felt today.

There's no denying that the man dubbed "Super Cam" is rightfully viewed as a Carolina legend, but his Hall of Fame case isn't as cut-and-dried. CBS Sports analyst Bryan DeArdo recently broke down Newton's case for earning a gold jacket, and it was complicated, to say the least.

"Meteoric highs and lows largely embody Newton's career," DeArdo writes. "In 2015, for example, he won the league MVP while leading the Panthers to a 15-1 regular-season record and an NFC title. He had a forgettable Super Bowl, however, marked by his lack of urgency in recovering his second fumble of the game, which ultimately set up the Broncos' game-clinching score. Newton also had a short prime that was likely the byproduct of being one of the greatest running quarterbacks in NFL history. It came at a price: exposing himself to major hits."

As DeArdo lays out, Newton's career was one of incredible highs followed by some pretty significant lows. In his prime, there arguably hasn't been a single quarterback as physically imposing as Cam, combining elite athleticism with the kind of size nobody had ever seen at the position before or since.

His 2015 MVP campaign illustrated just how untouchable Newton was at his absolute peak, but the way things ended against the Broncos in Super Bowl 50 has regrettably (and unfairly) tainted that legendary season in the minds of many.

There's also the fact that, while Newton's prime was truly elite, it was unfortunately cut short by his bruising style of play, which has further blurred his HOF case.

All in all, the likelihood of Cam joining Kuechly and other franchise legends like Julius Peppers and Sam Mills in Canton is murky at best. That being said, his status as a legend in Carolina was cemented long ago, and that's something that can never be taken away.
