What Rams’ Preseason Snap Counts Tell Us About the 53-Man Roster

In this story:
The Los Angeles Rams wrapped up their second preseason game on Saturday, beating the New Orleans Saints 34-0. When it comes to the preseason, the Rams typically don’t play their starters or those they see as key depth. If a player doesn’t play, it tends to mean that they are a lock for the final 53-man roster heading into the season.
Following the second preseason game, here’s a list of players who haven’t played in the preseason as well as players who have missed one game.
Rams Players on Offense Who Haven't Played in the Preseason
Rams Offensive Players Who Missed One Preseason Game
- OT AJ Arcuri (Week 1)
- WR Xavier Smith (Week 2)
- iOL Beaux Limmer (Week 2)
- OL Keagen Trost (Injured)
It does seem notable that the Rams signed Alex Bachman after the first preseason game to return punts and take Xavier Smith’s spot at wide receiver. An argument can be made that Smith was on the roster bubble heading into the preseason. However, following his 40-yard return that changed the game, it seems he’s locked up his roster spot. The same can be said for Beaux Limmer.
When AJ Arcuri didn’t play at all in the first preseason game, some took that as an indication that he made the roster. If Alaric Jackson is suspended,it’s possible that Arcuri is on the final 53-man roster. With that said, the Rams seem to be rotating guys on the offensive line. Arcuri was back on the field for Week 2.
Rams Offensive Players Who Haven’t Played This Preseason
- QB Matthew Stafford
- QB Matthew Caldwell
- iOL Coleman Shelton
- RG Kevin Dotson
- RT Warren McClendon
- LG Steve Avila
- LT Alaric Jackson
- OT David Quessenberry
- WR Puka Nacua
- WR Davante Adams
- WR Konata Mumpfield
- WR Jordan Whittington
- RB Ronnie Rivers
- RB Kyren Williams
- RB Blake Corum
- TE Terrance Ferguson
- TE Colby Parkinson
- TE Davis Allen
- TE Tyler Higbee
There shouldn’t be any real surprises here. All of these players are starters or key depth. If there is one surprise, it might be Ronnie Rivers. Rivers has become the Troy Reeder of the offensive side of the ball. Given that he’s missed both games, Rivers’ roster spot seems like a lock.
It also seems notable that neither Konata Mumpfield nor David Quessenberry has played in the preseason. Both players are likely seen as key depth on offense. If the Rams are without Jackson, it looks like Quessenberry might be the guy to take his spot.

Rams Players on Defense Who Haven't Played in the Preseason
Rams Defensive Players Who Missed One Preseason Game
- LB Elias Neal (Week 1)
- EDGE Tomon Fox (Week 1)
- CB Zech McPhearson (Week 2)
- DL Ty Hamilton (Week 2)
- DE Desjuan Johnson (Week 2)
Desjuan Johnson not playing against the Saints seems notable. Given that he is important depth on the edge, it was somewhat surprising to see him play in the opener. Johnson didn’t play against the Saints, seemingly locking up his roster spot.
However, the decision not to play Hamilton is confusing. It was thought that Hamilton was on the roster bubble and now it’s possible Hamilton has made the roster. Elias Neal didn’t play the first game, but that may be more about the Rams wanting to rotate players at linebacker.

- NT Poona Ford
Much like the offensive side of the ball, there aren’t really any surprises here. All of these players are seen as starters or key depth going into the regular season. You could argue that a few of these players should be playing, but it’s better for the Rams not to risk injury.
