Seattle Seahawks Ex Russell Wilson Says He 'Opened Doors' For QBs Like Patrick Mahomes

Seattle Seahawks Ex Russell Wilson Says He 'Opened Doors' For QBs Like Patrick Mahomes

Former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson won a Super Bowl as a starter by the end of his second year in the NFL. Though he's yet to win his second ring, his Hall of Fame career will be highlighted by that dominant win over the Denver Broncos, which was followed up by another
trip to the Super Bowl the following season.

We all know what happened next in the heartbreaking loss to the New England Patriots, but Wilson leading Seattle to back-to-back Super Bowl berths is something not many quarterbacks can say they've done. That's what makes both he and Patrick Mahomes special QBs.

As Wilson's era comes closer to an end, Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are seemingly just getting started after repeating as world champs this past season in what was their fourth Super Bowl appearance in five years.

In an interview with Essence magazine, Wilson reflected on his past success in the Super Bowl and said that his journey to the big game twice has helped pave the way for Mahomes and other African American QBs to find even more success. Of course, these comments will be met with a fair share of disagree and criticism.

“For me to be able to go to back-to-back Super Bowls, and win one of them, I think opened up a lot of doors,” he said. “Now you see guys like Patrick Mahomes who won it; it’s really just us so far, but there’s more to come.” The emergence of quarterbacks like Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, Lamar Jackson and C.J. Stroud, to name a few, is indicative of a new era in football and a glimpse into what the sport is trending toward.”

Mahomes has already surpassed Wilson as one of the greatest QBs all-time, but one could argue that "opening doors" had nothing to do with it.

Wilson is obviously not the first black quarterback to play at a high level in the NFL, so taking what appears to be partial credit for Mahomes' championship success means the intention behind his comments came off the wrong way or he's just blind to history.

Either way, Mahomes has already made history that only Joe Montana and Tom Brady can top. With all do respect to Wilson, Mahomes is already in a tier above due to his own ability, and doesn't look like he's slowing down anytime soon.
