Instant Grade: Texans Land WR Kayshon Boutte in Trade With Patriots

The Houston Texans are adding a new pass catcher to their wide receiver room.

According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Texans are acquiring wide receiver Kayshon Boutte in a trade from the New England Patriots.

The Texans are reportedly sending over second-year safety Jayden Reed and future seventh-round pick from the New Orleans Saints to the Patriots in exchange for Boutte.

It was a much-needed, and even partly an expected move for the Texans to make after the recent events that have taken place at their wide receiver position. 2025 second-round pick Jayden Higgins went down with a torn ACL earlier last week during practice, and will be sidelined for the entire 2026 season because of it.

And now, the Texans have acted quickly by bringing in Boutte as the latest name to their wide receiver room.

Let's break down the Texans' latest deal for what it means moving forward, along with an instant grade for how Houston fared.

What Texans Are Getting in Kayshon Boutte

Boutte has been circled as an easy trade target for teams–– and narely, the Texans–– across the league in recent days to weeks.

Boutte's in the final year of his contract, and on a Patriots team that acquired two other targets in A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs earlier this offseason, that makes it far less likely that he's in for a new deal with New England in 2027.

And for the Texans, they made sense as a perfect target. They had a clear need in their wide receiver room, and especially for someone that can effectively line up on the outside of Houston's offense as a starting-caliber pass-catcher opposite of Nico Collins.

Kayshon Boutte fits that mold quite well. He's a little smaller at 5-foot-11, but he's coming off of two quality seasons in New England, where he was a consistent, reliable target for Drake Maye.

In 2025, Boutte put together 33 receptions, 551 yards, and six touchdowns, the second straight year where he had over 30 catches and 500 yards. He was second in the Patriots' offense for total receiving touchdowns, and fifth in total receiving yards.

As a big-play, downfield threat, Boutte can be a noteworthy contributor. And pretty immediately, he could be in for some significant targets in the Texans' wide receiver room as the WR2 or WR3 behind Collins, and maybe Xavier Hutchinson.

Instant Grade: A

As it relates to the Texans' deal to bring in Boutte and how well they fared, you can't imagine a much better outcome. The draft capital they sent out was minimal, and the player they shipped out was at a position they had a nice chunk of depth at anyways.

Jaylen Reed is a nice safety with solid potential to be a starting-level defender, but the Texans already have a lot to work with at the position with Calen Bullock, Reed Blankenship, Jalen Pitre, and fifth-round rookie Kamari Ramsey. Shedding a depth piece from that group and investing in their wide receiver group is a stellar way to manage those assets.

Now, the Texans can take a deep breath for what lies ahead in their receiver room, and have a solid group of weapons behind Collins to rely on to, at the very least, stay afloat without Higgins' presence for this season.

The only reason this move isn't an A+? Because of the uncertainty that lies ahead for Boutte in Houston past this season.

He's on an expiring contract, and in a wide receiver room that also faces pending free agents for Xavier Hutchinson and Tank Dell, there are no guarantees that this will be a multi-year pairing between the Texans and Boutte.

But for now, the move to bring in a trustworthy receiver like Boutte was necessary and took minimal cost to make happen. With that in mind, an A feels like the right grade.
