NASHVILLE - The New York Jets are set to release receiver Denzel Mims, according to a Tuesday morning Twitter report by Brian Costello, who covers the Jets for the New York Post.

The former Baylor star was a second-round selection but the Jets, No. 59 overall in 2020. Now, after three seasons in the league, the team that drafted him is ready to move on from a player who has failed to live up to his draft position.

A hamstring injury and another personal situation cost Mims time during his rookie campaign, where he missed most of that training camp and did not make his season debut until week seven.

Mims set career highs during his shortened rookie campaign, with 23 receptions for 357 yards. Since then, Mims has collected a combined  19 receptions for 319 yards and has yet to record a touchdown.

Yes, my initial response was likely what some reading this will think. No way; why should the Titans have any interest in a player who's produced so little so far in his career?

That's a good question and a legitimate reason for skepticism.

However, when you look beyond those meager numbers and understand that during training camp in 2022, Mims and his agent asked the Jets to trade him, as he did not feel he was given a legitimate chance to impact the offense.

The trade was not granted, and Mims struggled for playing time, and limited chances, as he appeared in ten games and received 25 targets, where he collected 11 receptions for 186 yards.

So what was it that made Mims a talent with a second-round selection?

Consider his size, 6-foot-2 7/8, 207 pounds, and a 4.38 forty time, a 38.5" vertical and a 10-foot 11-inch broad jump, and 16 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press.

That athletic profile seems worthy of early-round consideration, which caused the Jets to take him in round two.

As for the Titans, there's been no indication of interest on their part, and considering the team has just agreed in principle to a deal with free agent DeAndre Hopkins, this team might not be interested in Mims.

However, given that head coach, Mike Vrabel stated clearly that they would continue to look for upgrades following the NFL Draft, there should be at least enough interest to kick the tires on a player whose physical ability seems higher than some currently on the Titans roster.

In the end, I don't expect Mims to be a Titan, but again, it's worth the effort to check him out and see if he could be a player capable of improving this roster, and likely at a very team-friendly cost.
