Greg's Grumblings: List, Lists, And More Lists, And Some Rankings Too

Today I begin a new thing where I share my annoyances through this column called Greg's Grumblings.
Andrew Nelles / The Tennessean / USA TODAY NETWORK

In this story:

NASHVILLE - It's not Monday, but since the idea to write about things that bother me in the world of NFL football, and perhaps sports in general at times, came to my mind, I didn't want to wait till Monday to start, thus a special inaugural Thursday edition.

As for what I'm grumbling about this day, it's lists and rankings.

Granted, I'm aware, and also guilty of making some of these at times, and that they are useful tools to fill these periods during the offseason when there isn't much new news or new storylines that can provide those in the media with exciting content to share.

Still, when making these lists, not all are created equally, and with the growing number of sports fans who want to be part of the media, some of the upstart sites appearing nowadays provide us with things that range from strange to absurd to downright ridiculous.

Yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion, and just because I share mine doesn't mean I'm always right, and I'm very open to criticism and disagreement with my views. Yes, in this day of the internet, anyone who can operate a computer and get a site build can now call themselves the media and act as if they have insider information.

However, not all sites and all information are sourced and accurate, and not all opinions are informed. When I encounter some of these things, I can only shake my head and wonder where the heck these people find these stories.

Ss for rankings, well, are subjective and often at the writer's opinion, but then some of those are done strictly to aggravate fans of certain teams to draw attention and page views.

Once again, I'm all for people doing what they want, and if you want to follow such sites, so be it. But if you do, then don't be surprised when you get dumb rumors and other internet nonsense that is a waste of bandwidth.

As for those running these types of sites, please continue to do what you want, but could you at least try to share useful information rather than making up stuff and throwing it at the wall to watch it splatter?
