NFL Scouting Combine: Titans Coaches Built Position 'Profile Tapes' to Prepare Team Scouts

In preparation for the NFL Scouting Combine, Tennessee Titans coaches and player personnel scouts met for two days to discuss team needs and the qualities sought in players for those positions. Coaches built "profile tapes" for each position — none better than offensive line boss Bill Callahan.

INDIANAPOLIS — The professional marriage of Tennessee Titans coach Bill Callahan and general manager Ran Carthon is off to a great start, both parties said, and the collaboration has been evident in the team's preparation for the NFL Scouting Combine.

Speaking first to the media on Tuesday, Carthon described meetings in Nashville where the coaching staff and player personnel scouts came together to discuss team needs and the qualities sought in players for those positions.

"We had a big profile tape meeting where each position coach put together what they're looking for at their respective positions. It was very detailed. ... We spent four hours meeting with the offensive coaches on the first day and another four with the defensive coaches, and we'll meet with the special-teams guys when we get back.

"Our No. 1 thing is getting the right people in the building. If you look at how we built this staff, it'll be the same way we build our team with right people. There's an acronym I like to use: FIT. And where, applicable, we want to be fast, instinctive, and tough. For an offensive or defensive lineman, you don't necessarily have to be fast so that F becomes fundamentally sound."

Carthon singled out the coach's dad specifically for the quality of his insights.

"We have a guy named Bill Callahan, aka Big Coach, who's one of the best in the business. His profile tape was a clinic. Everyone's mind was blown. It brought us all to the realization that we have a lot to learn about coaching."

Brian Callahan jokingly sighed when asked about the detailed nature of his father's profile tape.

"I've been around a lot of good offensive line coaches, but my dad is unique in how he teaches offensive line play," Brian Callahan said. "He's a great communicator and there's a high level of expectation. He's on the cutting edge of offensive play. He's adapted and adjusted as well as anybody, which is why he's one of the best coaches in the game."
