Los Angeles Angels infielder Anthony Rendon will have hip surgery and miss significant time, general manager Perry Minasian told reporters Wednesday.

Minasian called it a long-term issue for Rendon.

Minasian said Rendon had a setback in his rehab the last few weeks, and will now miss significant time this season. It's unclear if and when he'll play for the Angels again this year.

Rendon, 32, signed a seven-year, $245 million contract with the Angels ahead of the 2020 season. After playing in 52 of the 60 games in 2020, he hasn't played in more than 58 games in a season since. This is the second-to-last year of his contract, one that could go down as the worst in Major League Baseball history.

Rendon's Angels tenure has been marred by injuries, and this is yet another brutal setback. Rendon has played in just 205 games since 2021, missing a total of 443 during that time.

Rendon will have the same amount of stints on the injured list (13) as home runs with the Angels since 2021.

Rendon was already expected to open the season on the bench after the Angels signed Yoan Moncada to a one-year, $5 million deal. Moncada was expected to open the season as the starting third baseman, with Rendon spending time as the backup third baseman and first baseman.

Now, however, it's clear that the Moncada signing was even more important.
