San Francisco Giants Reportedly Made Offer To Yankees Starter

The San Francisco Giants made a run at a free-agent starting pitcher this offseason that eventually ended up with the New York Yankees.

The San Francisco Giants could use a starter like Marcus Stroman right now. It’s not like they didn’t try, either.

Stroman is off to a hot start in his first season with the New York Yankees. He is 1-1 with a 2.12 ERA in three starts and the quality of his pitching has taken loomed large as the Yankees try to navigate their rotation until injured Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole returns.

He hit free agency after opting out of the final year of his deal with the Chicago Cubs last year.

But it’s possible that he could have been a Giant, per the New York Post.

The Giants and the San Diego Padres were two teams that made an offer to Stroman, along with the Kansas City Royals and the Yankees, where he ultimately signed a two-year, $37 million deal with a $1 million signing bonus.

The report did not indicate how much the Giants were offering, but it did note that Stroman received both a two-year and a three-year offer from San Francisco.

The Giants did make moves in their starting rotation, as they signed Jordan Hicks and traded for Robbie Ray. The Giants also signed National League Cy Young winner Blake Snell just after the start of the season. He is expected to make his second start against Tampa Bay on Sunday.

Injuries are an issue too. Alex Cobb is recovering from left hip surgery and, after a minor setback, likely won’t be back until May. The Giants traded for Ray knowing that he would miss the first half of the season as he recovered from Tommy John surgery. He is throwing bullpens as he starts to gear up for a return.

But, in the short term, Stroman would have been a solid option, as he entered this season with a 77-76 career record with a 3.45 ERA.
