Is Giants Starter Carson Whisenhunt Beginning to Turn the Corner at the MLB Level?

The 25-year-old pitcher represents the older batch of San Francisco's overall group of prized prospects, and it appears he's rounding into form as a full-time big leaguer

If you're a San Francisco Giants fan, then you've got to be rooting for pitcher Carson Whisenhunt. Not just because the 25-year-old hurler has the potential to be a frontline starter for San Fran, but also because they know he's battled hard to get to the Major Leagues.

Now, after four years of being considered the team's southpaw ace of the future, we may have just witnessed him step forward for that very role.

Whisenhunt, whom the Giants originally drafted in the second round (66th overall) of the 2022 MLB Draft, received almost immediate fanfare upon his arrival in the organization. But along the way, he's had his ups and downs. One of the best moments of his young career came in Tuesday's win over the NL East-leading Houston Astros. The port-sider allowed one run on four hits, issued three walks, and retired 11 in a row at one point in his performance.

 “I think it showed a tremendous amount of composure to do what he did,” Giants manager Tony Vitello said. “I think once he bought into what he was capable of doing, he seemed to get in a little groove there, confidence-wise.”

Several of Vitello's players were chiming in about the outing and the pitcher's many merits. His teammates know they have a special talent when Whiz walks out to the hill.

“He’s a great pitcher; he always has been,” commented first baseman Bryce Eldridge. “I know he’s been frustrated with his last few outings.”

Wisenhunt, who has battled through some minor arm injuries and arm discomfort this season, said that he felt good during his performance. He was also displaying the confidence that the coaching staff has been trying to instill in the youngster.

“The more I throw it, the better I’ll get a feel for it and the better it’ll be,” Whisenhunt said. “Tonight, it felt really good.”

There's a lot to like about what Whisenhunt brings to the mound. He's adept at changing speeds and has a great mix of pitches in his arsenal

The southpaw starter showcases four solid pitches along with plenty of minor-league savvy and solid durability. He will enter Spring Training next year as a leading candidate for a role in the rotation.

As he finishes up his duties in 2026, Whisenhunt is laying the groundwork to begin next season as a solidified starter. And make no mistake: 'Whiz' will be making magic on the mound for the Giants for several seasons to come.
