Miami Marlins Shuffle Roster, Activate New Trade Acquisition and Call Up Reliever

The Marlins, once again, are trying to get a fresh arm for their bullpen

Prior to today's game, the Miami Marlins have made some roster moves to reinforce both the defense and the rotation.

The first move is activating newly-acquired Emmanuel Rivera, who Miami acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks after he was designated for assignment. Rivera, 27, will slot in as an option at third base for Miami on the days when Jake Burger shifts to cover first base when Josh Bell is the designated hitter.

Known as a solid defender, Rivera batted .261 in 86 games for Arizona last season as part of a rotation at third base with Evan Longoria. He was designated for assignment after offseason trade acuqisition Eugenio Suarez was installed as the new everyday third baseman in spring training.

The corresponding move for Miami was to option utilityman Jonah Bride to AAA Jacksonville. The 28-year-old has gone 1-7 in his five games of work, walking once and striking out twice.

Miami also got more bullpen reinforcements, calling up right-handed Matt Andriese from AAA Jacksonville. Kent Emmanuel, who was designated for assignment to make a roster spot for Andriese, was called up and immediately put to work against Los Angeles, pitcing the final three innings. Emmanuel allowed four runs on four hits in his three innings of work, walking three and striking out two.

It's the third time that Miami's needed to call up a pitcher already this season due to the heavy workload on the bullpen - Marlins relievers have pitched 36.2 of the team's 67 innings across the team's first seven games, owing to both multiple extra innings contests and short outings from converted releivers Ryan Weathers and A.J. Puk.
