On a fateful Friday afternoon, the San Diego Padres lost their first game of the 2025 season. Though the Friars certainly came out hot, the Los Angeles Dodgers remain the lone undefeated team in Major League Baseball.

The NL West had the final pair of undefeated teams in the Padres and Dodgers. It was only a matter of time before one of the clubs lost.

The Padres couldn't get the job done against the Chicago Cubs, suffering a 3-1 loss. Left-hander Shota Imanaga dominated the San Diego lineup for 7.1 innings.

The Cubs scored two runs in a decisive fifth inning, ultimately ending the Padres' franchise record win streak at seven games.

While San Diego earned its first loss of the season, the Padres began the season in historic fashion.

"It's a good start," manager Mike Shildt said of the team's record.

The Dodgers have a chance to extend their eight-game win streak Friday against the Philadelphia Phillies. But the fact that two NL Wests team's have the best records in MLB only prove the division is the best in baseball.

The Padres won't face their division rivals until June, but make no mistake, there will be plenty of more victories from the Friars in the coming months.

As for whether the Padres are even thinking about the defending champions? Right-hander Michael King answered.

“It’s way too early,” King said. “I’ve said that the teams that get out hot, you know they’re going to come back to earth. We feel like we’re a team that is not going to come back to earth.”
