San Diego Padres closer Robert Suarez has been added to the National League All-Star roster as a replacement to Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Chris Sale.

Suarez joins Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, and Jason Adam as Padres on the roster for the Midsummer Classic in Atlanta.

Suarez is getting his second All-Star nod after he earned a selection in the 2024 season. He hasn't been dominant like he was last season, but the closer remains one of the better relief pitchers in the game.

This season, Suarez's ERA sits at 3.82 through 40 relief appearances. His stat line includes 40 strikeouts and 12 walks, while clinching 25 saves for the Padres — the most in the National League.

His home run rate is only 2.5 percent, the lowest figure of his MLB career.

His fielder-independent pitching, which is based on the ERA scale, is 2.34 — indicating some bad luck factoring into his numbers.

Suarez's selection won't come as a shock to manager Mike Shildt, who told Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune that San Diego's bullpen has several All-Star caliber players.

“I mean, we got four guys down there that if you put any of their names in the All Star Game,” Padres manager Mike Shildt told Saunders, "you’d say, yeah, it makes perfect sense.”

The 34-year-old arm has an opt-out in his contract for the upcoming winter, which he will likely exercise to secure a bigger, longer-term deal with the Padres or another team.
