Good News for Red Sox's Trevor Story, Garrett Crochet

The Boston Red Sox provided positive injury updates about Trevor Story and Garrett Crochet on Tuesday.

The Boston Red Sox's first significant domino fell on Tuesday night from an injury perspective.

Adley Rutschman was activated off the Injured List and made his Boston debut in a loss against the Toronto Blue Jays. With Rutschman now in the fold, Boston is still waiting for three more injured key pieces, above all else: Roman Anthony, Garrett Crochet and shortstop Trevor Story.

When it comes to Anthony, Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy shared on Tuesday that he's "getting closer" to kicking off a minor league rehab assignment. That was the most positive update Tracy offered on Tuesday, but it wasn't the only one. Tracy shared that Story is "creeping closer" to a return. While Tracy noted that Crochet is still "a ways to go," he did note that he's still throwing.

"Crochet was back to throwing," Tracy said while giving injury updates for the club. "Trevor was able to ramp up the intensity a little more after a regen day. So, Crochet a ways to go. Trevor creeping closer also."

These are both positive updates. Let's dive in on both players.

Trevor Story

Story hasn't played in game since May 14. He underwent sports hernia surgery and has been rehabbing ever since. There have been a wide range of updates for Story. Back in mid-July, Story said that he "feels close" to a minor league rehab assignment. That hasn't kicked off yet, though.

This update from Tracy on Tuesday is a step in that direction. At this point, there isn't a concrete timeline for a return. While Story struggled early on this season, he will help this club when he's healthy and ready to return. Story wasn't at full strength early this season, so it's not shocking that he batted .206 in 41 games. Last year, he slashed .263/.308/.433 with 25 home runs, 96 RBIs and 31 stolen bases. If that version of Story could return down the stretch, his early struggles will be forgotten quickly.

Garrett Crochet

Crochet hasn't made a start since Aug. 25. He dealt with shoulder and lat injuries, but he's finally trending in the right direction. Crochet began throwing towards the beginning of August from 50-60 feet. Any update that continues to have him throwing is a positive one.

With time running out in the 2026 regular season, it would arguably be a bit surprising to see him return to full force by the time the season ends. He would need a long build-up, similar to Spring Training. But the Red Sox have already cracked open the door to the possibility of Crochet pitching in relief if he can return this season. At this point, it's just a matter of waiting and hoping there isn't another setback.
