Roman Anthony's Rehab Just Hit Another Level for Red Sox

If you're a Boston Red Sox fan, it's hard not to be extremely excited right now.

First and foremost, the Red Sox scratched and clawed their way back into the American League playoff race. In about six weeks, the Red Sox transformed their season and went from sitting near the bottom of the American League standings to fighting for the top Wild Card spot. That's enough to be excited, but there's much more for Boston fans right now.

All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman made his Boston debut on Tuesday night against the Toronto Blue Jays. When he gets going, he's going to be a big bat in the middle of the order that this club has been searching for all season. But even that's not all.

More Progress For Roman Anthony

Over the last few weeks, positive injury updates around Roman Anthony have been piling up. On Tuesday, Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy dropped the most positive update since Anthony landed on the Injured List and shared that he's not only hitting off a high-velocity Trajekt machine, but he's also "getting closer" to a minor league rehab assignment.

"Roman started adding some Trajekt as well," Tracy said of Anthony. "He's been hitting off a machine ... He's now started to incorporate some Trajekt work, which is as close as you can get to live pitching without facing live pitching. That has started to get incorporated into his routine. He'll carry that for a little bit of time.

"Getting closer, getting closer," Tracy continued about a potential rehab assignment.

Tracy made sure to point out that he doesn't want to put a timetable on Anthony at this time. This isn't shocking with all of the conflicting updates from the club early on after he got hurt in the first place. But it's hard not to get excited about this news from Tracy.

With Anthony utilizing the Trajekt, that's a clear sign that he's very close to facing live pitching. At that point, it's only going to be a matter of time before he's facing live pitchers in a rehab assignment. The second he kicks off a rehab assignment, a 20-day countdown will begin. That's the maximum amount of time a position player can stay on a rehab assignment.

So, things are trending in the right direction. While it's unknown right now when Anthony will return, right when a rehab assignment is announced, we'll have a clear-cut timeline.
